Getting Started with your Personal Web Space!

Welcome to the World Wide Web!! Your Personal Web Space is your 20 MB presence on the internet. If you have not registered for your free space yet, please click here.

Once you have created your web page you will undoubtedly want to upload it to your Personal Web Space! These instructions will show how to access it. Below are the common settings that you will use with your Personal Web Space followed by instructions on how to apply those settings

Server to connect to: ftp.southslope.net
Username to use: Your southslope.net username
Password to use: Your southslope.net password

 

1) Setup your FTP client with the above settings. We recommend using SmartFTP
if you are using a Windows PC. SmartFTP can be downloaded at SmartFTP.com. If you are using a Macintosh we recommend you use Fetch, which can also be found at Download.com.

2) Once connected, you will be in your home directory. You will need to move into the .web directory to transfer files. Any CGI scripts MUST be placed in the .web directory or a subdirectory or the server will not see it and will refuse to run it.

3) Valid 'start' (home page) files are

  • index.html
  • index.htm
  • home.html
  • home.htm
  • index.shtml
  • home.shtml
  • index.php
  • home.php

Pages using SSI ( Server Side Includes ) MUST be named with a .shtml extension.


4) Personal Web Space will allow you to use the following types of web content: HTML, SSI, Javascript, Perl and Shell based CGI, PHP, access to .htaccess (password protection).


5) Personal Web Space does not include the ability to do the following: Java ( note this is Java, not Javascript; which is supported ), SSL, Databases, Front Page Extensions (you can create your site with Front Page, just not using the Front Page Extensions) and Anonymous FTP .


6) Your Personal Web Space Web Address will be: http://www.southslope.net/~username/

7) For scripting purposes, you may need the absolute path to your site. The path is as follows:

/isp/virtual_homes/net/southslope/your username
